Legendary rap group NWA's ‘Straight Outta Compton’ is now the highest-grossing music biopic in history

Only three weeks after its release, Straight Outta Compton becomes the highest-grossing music biopic ever.

The filmed story of legendary rap group NWA is making history. Straight Outta Compton has topped the american box office for the third weekend in a row, triumphing with $13,2 million.  In theaters for less than a month, the movie directed by F. Gary Gray has grossed more than $134 million in total.
Showcasing the rise of N.W.A, the gangsta rap supergroup of the late 1980’s that included Dr Dre, Ice Cube and Eazy-E amongst other, Straight Outta Comptonhas earned $56.1 million in its opening week.
This high score has just made the movie the highest-grossing music biopic in history, outdoing Walk the Line, a 2005 music biopic about country singer Johnny Cash. Thanks to the success of Straight Outta Compton, now two of the three top-grossing biopics are about hip hop artists. Indeed, 8 Mile a biopic based on rapper Eminem’s life is the third one.
The film’s success has inspired a lot of other rap artists to come up with their own biopic about their career including Dj Premier (Gangstarr), Raekwon (Wu Tang Clan), Daz Dillinger (Tha Dogg Pound) and even Master P. Let’s hope they all reach the same box-office status as Straight Outta Compton, but let’s not forget how the Notorious BIG biopic kind of flopped a little bit.
